Fairies are on of the most misunderstood, and misrepresented creatures of all. And though not my favorite mythical creature (that would be the Dragon) it was one of the most fun to write about! Despite popular belief, Fairies are NOT the sparkly, friendly creatures they are made out to be.
Fairies are Dark, Mean, Evil creatures who love to play tricks on anyone who get's to close. Confused? Don't be. Appearing as beautiful friendly creatures is one of their many evil tricks. Have you ever thought about why Cinderella, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Hansel and Gretel. . and the countless other stories are referred to as Fairy Tales? Because the original stories, were Dark, Mean, Evil, Gruesome stories.
Now they have been re-written so many times that rarely do people know the true stories, as well as the true nature of Fairies. Hence the fact that now most people believe fairies to be wonderful, beautiful, kind creatures.
Fairies in general are actually supposed to be very beautiful on the outside. It is part of their charm. They make people believe they are beautiful so they can trap them with their ugly hearts.
Fairies are also associated with Brownies which is very funny considering a brownie is nothing like a Fairy at all. Brownies are actually house elfs. Yep, house elf, as in Dobby the house elf from Harry Potter. See? Nothing at all alike.
Anyone who has read the original Brothers Grimm knows those fairy tales are dark.

ReplyDeleteThey are very fun to research, that's for sure! With all the information I found, I could write an entire book on Fairies alone! (But I am supposed to be keeping my posts short for the A to Z challenge. . . )

DeleteI always thought it was not so much that they were dark and mean as that they are sociopaths. Yes, I know that sounds like a contradiction, but I mean that they don't recognize our values of good and evil and they don't empathize with us. Thus, they feel free to do what they want to get what they want.

That could be part of it. But then why would Fairy tales be called that? I guess some of those stories were very crazy. . . :)

ReplyDeleteI just like to hear that people know the original stories. It is sad that Disney (for the most part) has taken these stories and glamorized them to death! And I have read a lot of versions of a lot of these stories and a lot of them are fun and funny and not dark at all and I still like them. I just like knowing the original stories as well.
DeleteBut I always thought that to see a fairy is special. I don't mean little girls dancing round in a circle. Maybe I'm getting mixed up with angels.

I guess seeing a fairy could be considered special as long as they aren't attacking you. :) Or playing tricks on you.
DeleteTinkerbell is very much like what original fairies were. She gets jealous and angry and isn't the bright happy fairy all the time.
I am learning so much from this blog. But still can't relate to the little creatures, although in children's Russian literature, there are many mythical and magical creations and growing up I learned about witches, Baba Yaga, and magical horses, The Little Magic Horse.

ReplyDeleteWith your daughter being that age, it's probably for the best. The original dark stories were used to make kids understand the importance of obeying. I don't think we need to use the same techniques these days. . .

DeleteI am really enjoying your A to Z. The new TV series Once Upon a Time has brought new meaning to some of the "fairy" tales of our youth. An older favorite of mine was the TV mini-series, 10th Kingdom.

DeleteI love the old Grimm versions of the tales and share the discrepancies between Disney and reality all the time. Fairies are the ultimate temptresses :)
ReplyDeleteI love looking at the difference. One of the things I find most hilarious about Disney's version is that they didn't do much research. For example: In Sleeping Beauty, the part of the spindle that the princess pricks her finger on, isn't actually sharp on a real spindle. She 'got poked' on the wrong part of the spindle!

DeleteI think of Tinker Bell too, and that wonderful little tooth fairie that visiting me when I was a kid and even came to visit my daughter. I'm sure she'll visit my daughter's kids too (if she ever marries and has any)because we've always loved her. Once she wrote a note to us and told us exactly what she looked like. I guess she's a 'generational' fairie and sticks to our family.
