Goblins

Goblins, are also sometimes associated with Fairies.  (I don't know why this would be other than they are both mean little creatures).
Some say that Goblins are also evil. Their name coming from the Greek kobaloi, which means 'Evil spirit'.
This of course makes perfect sense if you think about the goblins working at Gringotts bank in Harry Potter.  How many of those little guys look happy?  How many times is Harry betrayed by a goblin?  (Actually I can only think of the last movie when he is betrayed but that's beside the point. . . )  :)

And to those I said I would try to do Gargoyles for my 'G' post, I am sorry that did not happen.  (I sorta ran out of time and don't have enough information on Gargoyles at the ready to just do a post on them.)  So, I promise that in May, I will write a post all about Gargoyles.

  1. Ahh, Goblins! Cousins to Orcs if you follow the Tolkien mold. I can remember being terrified of the idea of goblins when I was a kid, but I had no idea what they were. I just thought the word sounded scary. Then I read the Hobbit and didn't exactly feel any better!

    1. Goblin is kind of a scary word to hear. . . As for the Orcs, I will be talking about those later on in the month! :)

    1. Thank you! I am trying to put interesting facts about each creature. Some creatures are easier than others for me to write about.

  5. Hi Konstanz!
I used to LOVE fairies! I collected them and they are SO beautiful and some just plain cute! That's the problem! They lead you to betrayal! Ha! Nice article!

  6. Very interesting theme you have going. I'm not sure I know anything about this subject at all. Goblins always belonged to halloween in my childhood. Of course, I saw the Harry Potter movies but just for entertainment and to share with my daughter. :) I couldn't tell you who or what any of those creatures were. I do remember that humongous snake vividly for some reason.

  8. Gargoyles are guardians, which is why they appear on the structures of many English buildings. (Sorry, that's the only information I can offer.)

    1. Yes they are. Ooh that would be cool to see! I wish newer buildings were built like old ones. There are so many beautiful old buildings I would love to own that have Gargoyles on them.

  11. I love the use of goblins in Harry Potter. And pretty much everything (I wrote a paper on Goblin Market in college). Great post and happy A-Z blogging.

  12. I too am a fan of Goblins, their bad balances out the good in most stories. Gargoyles are guardians against evil spirits but they also have a practical use. They divert the rain water from the roof of those beautiful old buildings away from the walls, sort of like pre historic downpipes.
Just an aside, and I'm sorry to add to your reading list, an Australian Author - Ruth Park wrote a childrens book called Snugglepot & Cuddlepie - the banksia men in that story are an Aussie version of Goblins and are really really scary. : )

  13. I'm kind of scared of goblins - I know they aren't real (probably). Maybe I was told too many goblin stories when I was little.

  16. This may be a silly question, but what's the difference between a regular goblin and a hobgoblin?

I know I could Google, but then I'd probably find dozens of pages. So it seems easier to ask an "expert" :)

    1. Not a silly question at all, in fact it is probably something I should have mentioned in the actual post. And thank you for choosing to ask me over looking it up on Google. :)

      Here is your answer.

      Goblin: Evil, mischievous creature.
Hobgoblin: Happy, kind version of the Goblin.

      Hope that helps!
