Icarus by Danika Stone ~ A Book Review

Being the ‘new kid’ at school is hard, but for Tess Novak - who’s moved more times than she can remember - it’s a role she knows by heart. Transferring during senior year means yet another place she’ll eventually leave, more classmates she’ll forget.
Fate, it seems, has other plans.
From the moment Tess is introduced to honor student Drew Martinez, she is convinced she has met him before. But when? Confident and attractive, Drew is exactly the type of ‘rich kid’ Tess’s father hates, and Tess avoids. Thrown together by a class project, their tentative friendship sparks a smoldering attraction. Tess tries to keep Drew at arm’s length, but in weeks they are drawn into a scorching romance.
Fearing her father’s volatile reaction, Tess insists on keeping the relationship a secret. Meanwhile, she begins to uncover the mysterious connection which hearkens back to the half-forgotten days of her dark childhood, a past which appears to be connected to Drew. As each new puzzle piece falls into place, and the threat of discovery increases, Tess must decide whether she wants to keep living a lie, or expose the horrific events which tore Drew out of her life so many years before...

~ My Review ~

This is most definitely not what I expected. Drama, family issues, and one of the most heart breaking romances and friendships I've ever read! I had an issue getting into the book but once I was in, I didn't come back out until I reached the last page.

My emotions were kept on a roller coaster throughout the entire book. My eyes hurt from all the crying when I finally put it down. I can't wrap my head around how beautiful yet terrifying this story is!

I was confused when the POV changed and I was seeing things through the eyes of a child rather than a teenager but as soon as I realized what was happening it all just fell into place and I was absolutely hooked!

This book made me laugh, made me cringe, made me sigh, made me sob! Drew . . . *sigh* . . . Tess . . . aww. There's so much I could say yet I don't want to give anything away! I am not a fan of the swearing but it was understandable for the characters and the situations. Overall I thoroughly enjoyed this book! I can't wait to read Danika's other stories!

Crush by Lacey Weatherford ~ A Book Review + Giveaway

Cami Wimberley has a plan, and that plan includes no room for boys—especially the big time party animal, Hunter Wilder, no matter how handsome and charismatic he is. She’s beautiful, a senior, extremely talented, gets good grades, and is working her way toward her dream college to be a musical theater major. Everything is perfect.

Hunter Wilder does not want a girlfriend—that would complicate his life way too much right now. He especially doesn’t want this girl, Miss-Goody-Two-Shoes, so how come he can’t keep his eyes off her? He tries to keep her at arms length, but fate seems to keep pushing them together. Before long, it’s obvious to everyone they’re crushing on each other.

As sparks begin to fly, Hunter finds himself sinking deeper and deeper into hot water. Soon he’s scrambling to keep Cami from discovering his dark secret—one that can destroy their entire relationship.

My Review:

When I downloaded the e-copy (free at the time of posting!) of Crush by Lacey Weatherford I thought I was getting a sweet contemporary high school romance. HA! What I got was SO much better! Action packed, rocking romance, suspenseful to the point my heart could hardly take it! WOW!

I got halfway through the book before I got on Amazon and ordered the entire trilogy in paperback! And despite this, as soon as I finished Crush I paid for the kindle copy of Smitten because I didn't want to wait for the hard copies to arrive!

I've read a lot of books. A lot of good books. But it is a rare treat to find a book/series that eats at me all the time. A story that I just can't get out of my head. That was this book (and the sequels). At work all I could do is wait to get home so I could read more. And when I finished? I still couldn't get the characters and the story out of my mind!

I'm not gonna lie, I had a pretty good guess on what was going on right in the beginning but the suspense and the twist and turns still had me guessing til the very end!

Awakening Foster Kelly ~ A Book Review

If only a pile of wayward curls and the inability to stay on her feet were seventeen year-old Foster Kelly’s most pressing concerns. Unfortunately, stubborn hair and clumsiness are just the tip of it. At the age of five when Foster is told, “You don’t belong here,” it was only a mistake, but the result is one broken heart. These four carelessly spoken words have shaped and shadowed Foster, and now—a senior at Shorecliffs High-school—she seeks the wallflower’s existence, denying herself the most casual of friendships, much too afraid that someone will see what she believes is certain: she does not belong anywhere—or with anyone.

This reality would continue to suit her just fine; however . . . Love has a long-standing history of undoing broken hearts.

Like a comet, an unexpected arrival knocks Foster out of the crowded, starry sky, sending her directly into the limelight. Exposed and afraid, she will attempt to regain anonymity; but it isn’t so easy now that someone is watching. He pursues this shy enigma, confronting Foster’s deepest fears head-on, and in the process falls wholly and completely in love with her. But there is something he is not saying . . . a secret capable of certain ruin. Either he will break her heart once and for all, or he will heal it.

In the end, though, it is Foster who must decide if she is worth mending.

CARA ROSALIE OLSEN resides in sunny Southern California, where she lives with her very patient husband, Michael, and their spoiled pooch, Annabella. A product of a relatively normal childhood - whatever that means - Olsen recalls "Life had this relentlessly boorish way of reminding me I was wonky and unapproved. Regardless of status or gene pool, there is nothing simple or easy about growing up. Life doesn't play favorites or carry biases; it's the pits for everyone. But rather than constantly falling into the pit, often I chose to climb down willingly, lining the bottom with a soft place to land. That place is where I became a reader, and today, a writer."

Throughout high school Olsen struggled with subjects Math and Science, but excelled at the arts, written and performed, often finding a kindred spirit in those teaching Creative Writing and English Literature. What began with an ardency for language soon developed into a burgeoning desire to create. This yearning took shape in the form of poetry and short story fiction, both of which have been featured in print and online publications. Olsen's debut novel, Awakening Foster Kelly is the result of a four-year project born on a whim and sustained by its characters' tenacity and their refusal to give the author a minute to herself. "In the beginning, getting them to talk was like trying to light a wet match. So, we had several long, sometimes combative conversations. I told them that unless they started holding up their end of the deal, I would have no choice but to fill in the blanks with whatever scraps came to mind. It wasn't very long before I started showing up to find that everyone was already seated and waiting for me. We talked. I drank coffee. It was bliss."

These days Olsen considers herself incredibly blessed to be able to do what she loves most. However . . . if she wasn’t a full-time writer, she would have liked to join the cast of Saturday Night Live, or, taken over as CEO of Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory.

~ My Review ~

Awakening Foster Kelly . . . never before have I been so utterly confused by a book. But don’t let that scare you away. Hear me out. You see, I didn't truly know what to expect of this book. I thought I might be getting one thing and instead I got another thing entirely.

Many scenes had me so enthralled I couldn't put the book down. And other parts had me shaking my head, confused as to what happened and why the scene changed so suddenly. It was a constant battle – do I continue reading or do I give up and mark the book off as a DNF?

Alas, let me tell you how completely entranced I was by this book by the end. There was so much detail and sometimes that was actually a bad thing – at least in the moment. I truly was confused for large sections of the book but just as I was about to give up, something exciting would happen. And by the end of the book? Everything just fell into place - everything makes sense.

In many ways I connected with Foster. I understand where she was coming from and could see and even understand why she reacted the way she did. And that kept me reading even when I wanted to give up on this book. Something small that would pique my interest a little more. So I continued. And wow! What a journey. All the detail? The crazy journey this book takes you on? Well I would deem it very worth it by the end of the book. Without spoilers, let me warn you: You might very hate the ending. But then again, you might just love it.

At first I was hurt by the turn of events. So completely taken aback by what I was reading – terrified that one chapter could have ruined the entire story for me. But by the time I reached the last page I realized this very well may be one of the best books I've ever read.

This book most definitely is not for everyone. And in fact, if you are looking for a light read with a cute love story with a predictable happily ever after, don’t read this book. But if you’re up for an adventure, a challenge, if you’re up for something completely, utterly, crazily different in the worst and best way possible, read Awakening Foster Kelly.

A HUGE thank you to Cara for asking me to read and review this book. If not for that request, I wouldn't have ever enjoyed the epicness of this book!

And I assure you that receiving a free copy of the book in trade for a review did not in anyway change my opinions on this book. In fact, I love it so much I am now purchasing it in Paperback!

How to Date a Nerd ~ A Book Review

Zoe has a great pair of legs, perky boobs, and wears exactly what she needs to show it all off. She works hard for the easy sleazy ‘you only wish you were me’ reputation, burying who she really is—an all-out nerd.

The only time Zoe gets to be herself is when she hides under her comforter to read X-Men comics, sending jealousy stabs at everyone who attends Comic-Con. Keeping up her popular rep is too important, and she’s so damn insecure to care about the consequences. But when Zoe’s sister takes her car for a ‘crash and burn into a tree’ joyride, her parents get her a replacement. A manual. Something she doesn’t know how to operate, but her next door neighbor Zak sure as heck does.

Zak’s a geek to the core, shunned by everyone in school for playing Dungeons and Dragons at lunch and wearing “Use the Force” t-shirts. And Zoe’s got it bad for the boy. Only Zak doesn’t want Popular Zoe. He wants Geek Zoe.

She has to shove her insecurities and the fear of dropping a few rungs on the social ladder aside to prove to Zak who she really is and who she wants to be… if she can figure it out herself.

My Review:
I can honestly say this book took me by surprise. First off, I read it in two hours. I couldn't put it down! Second, I LOVE Zoe! I mean, I can seriously understand what she went through and the choice she has to make. And oh my goodness, Zak? Yeah, LOOOOOOVE him!

The writing is fantastic, totally believable for high school. Cassie definitely has a way with words! And my goodness, she really knows her stuff!  I am a huge fan of all the shows, comics, movies, and books mentioned in How to Date a Nerd so it was awesome to see so many fun facts put in there. Plus I actually learned a few nerdy facts! Score!

*Warning: There is language and some not so kid friendly discussions. I definitely recommend this book for older teenagers.

~ About the author ~

Cassie Mae (sometimes writes as Becca Ann ;)) is a nerd to the core from Utah, who likes to write about other nerds who find love. Her angel children and perfect husband fan her and feed her grapes while she clacks away on the keyboard. Then she wakes up from that dream world and manages to get a few words on the computer while the house explodes around her. When she’s not writing, she’s spending time with the youth in her community as a volleyball and basketball coach, or searching the house desperately for chocolate.

My Review:

This book has rendered me speechless. Such an adorable, lovable story! It truly took me by surprise and right from the beginning I was caught up in the book, unable to put it down, reading late at night not caring that I wasn't getting sleep.  And every moment spent away from the book was spent thinking about the story.

The book is beautifully written and pulls you right in.  Each character is unique, believable, and easy to connect with.  This beautiful story teaches that mistakes are made, and yet, you can be forgiven. You can forgive. And no matter how bad things get, there is always hope.

A Girl Trapped in a Mansion . . .

A Mysterious Old Woman . . .

The Boy Who Will Change Everything . . .

Rapunzel Untangled  by Cindy C Bennett

Fab Fane Fannigan: Are you saying you live at GOTHEL MANSION??? The Gothel Mansion?

RG: My mother calls it Gothel Manor, so maybe that’s different?

Fab Fane Flannigan: No, Rapunzel, there’s only one that I know of. It has to be the same. Are you telling me the truth here?

RG: Yes, of course. Is it weird that I live here?

Fab Fane Flannigan: No, not weird, just . . . never mind. So you live in the tower?

RG: Uh, the tower? I don’t know. Is it a tower?

Fab Fane Flannigan: Yes, it is. I know where it is. I’ll be there Friday at 8.

Rapunzel sensed the difference in his tone. Something wasn’t right.

Fab Fane Flannigan: Rapunzel, promise me one thing.

RG: Okay.

Fab Fane Flannigan: Don’t Google your house.

Rapunzel is not your average teenager. For one thing, she has a serious illness that keeps her inside the mysterious Gothel Mansion. And for another, her hair is 15 feet long. Not to mention that she’s also the key to ultimately saving the world from certain destruction.

But then she meets a boy named Fane, who changes all she has ever known, and she decides to risk everything familiar to find out who she really is.

Filled with romance, adventure, and mystery, Rapunzel Untangled is one story you won’t want to put down. Discover the true meaning of love and friendship in this modern twist to the classic fairytale.

My Review:

Rapunzel Untangled is a sweet, romantic (clean) re-telling!  It kept me reading into the late night hours, I couldn't put it down!

Fane has got to be one of my biggest book crushes right now! Awww, he's so wonderful!
Rapunzel is wonderful, believable  and despite everything going against her, she stands up for herself in the end and takes her life back.

The  story is of course is Rapunzel set in the modern day and I LOVE it!  Cindy even manages to get in "Rapunzel, throw down your hair."

I have to say, this (aside from Tangled) is probably my favorite re-tell of Rapunzel!

Thank you Cindy, for such a sweet, lovable, engaging read!

Tide Ever Rising ~ A Book Review & Giveaway

Just recently I reviewed The Alias by Mandi Tucker Slack.
Today I am lucky enough to get to review Tide Ever Rising as well!

.

Title: Tide Ever Rising
Author: Mandi Tucker Slack
Publisher: Cedar Fort
Pages: 208
Publication Date: February 12th 2013

Kadence Reynold’s favorite pastime is exploring old ghost towns, but when she and her sister, Maysha, stumble across an old journal and cheap pendant hidden in the depths of a crumbling foundation near Eureka, Utah, their world is suddenly turned upside down. Immediately, strange dreams and premonitions begin to haunt “Kadie” as she learns more about the author of the journal, Charlotte Clark. Kadie sets out on a journey to learn more about Charlotte and her family, and she and Maysha travel to Bremerton, Washington, where they discover Charlotte's still living twin sister, Adelaide and her family.

Kadie and Maysha, upon arriving in Washington, are immediately immersed in Adelaide and Charlotte’s story. Kadie soon learns that Charlotte disappeared the night of a tragic fire that took the lives of Adelaide’s entire family. With the help of Logan Mathews, Adelaide’s handsome grandson, and Charlotte’s ever disconcerting presence, Kadie delves into the past. Hoping to solve the mystery of Charlotte’s disappearance, Kadie immediately discovers the secrets contained in the journal will toss her and Adelaide’s family into a world filled with mystery, past regrets, and dark unknowns.

My Review:

When I began reading Tide Ever Rising I didn't really know what to expect.  On the first page I was slightly bored and unsure of where the story was going.  By the second page I found myself leaning closer to the pages, wanting to know what was going to happen.  Around page five I knew I wasn't going to be putting this book down anytime soon.

Mandi truly has a talent for writing. She brings her characters to life on the page and leaves you unable to put the book down.  I know this to be true after reading not one, but two of her books.

Kadie is smart, believable and throughout the book, all I wanted was to be there standing beside her during her adventure! Her sister, Maysha is hilarious, and very alive! Tide Ever Rising was read in one sitting during my lunch break at work.  Yes, I read it that fast I loved it so much!

Thank you, Mandi, for another fantastic book!

Emergence ~ A Book Review

Book Blurb:

Assassin Antony Danic has never killed an innocent man. At least, the corporation he works for has never given him a reason to think otherwise--until now. Reeling from a series of demanding assignments, Antony is desperate for some downtime. As he sits on a beach in Tahiti watching his wife play in the ocean, a messenger delivers a death threat. In a matter of seconds, the hunter has become the hunted. While Antony scrambles to find a way out of his "till death do us part" contract, he's faced with the decision of a lifetime: kill another innocent man, or do what's right--even if it puts his family in jeopardy.

My Review:

Fast paced, heart pounding, sweaty palm action.  This book keeps you on your toes, guessing at every turn.
Who is good? Who is bad? And who dies next?
Antony doesn't know who to trust, who to kill, and who to let live.

This book will keep you reading late into the night, never giving you a break to put it down.

Warning: Once you start reading, you won't stop until you've reached the end!

Characters? Incredible, believable.
Writing? 5 stars alone just for the writing.
Story? Think James Bond only better!

Overall rating of Emergence?

5 Dragons
