The world against dragons. One girl against the world.

There are dragons in the Arizona Mountains, and only Alita Drake knows it. No one believed her at three years old when she stumbled across them during a family picnic. They certainly wouldn’t believe her now.

Not that she’s allowed to tell anyone anyway—her dragon, Yackros, made that clear. The other dragons can never know about the human who now visits their hidden forest, and humans aren’t supposed to know about dragons.

But nothing stays secret forever.

Now Alita must accept that she alone can save her dragon from the dark clutches of Ruxsiu, a false king acting as ruler. Finding the true dragon king can save her best friend, but it isn’t something she can do alone. She must convince her boyfriend to help despite his disbelief in dragons and trust a strange old librarian in the race to save the only relic that can fix everything—the dragon’s pearl.

If I gave up yesterday, who won't I be friends with tomorrow?

When I first started blogging, I had no clue what I was doing.  None whatsoever.  I just sat down one day and decided to start.  I don't know what made me want to blog.  Maybe it was because in my mind "this is what authors do and I want to be an author",  maybe it is because I had some fabulous idea that I thought deserved to be shared.  I suppose to this day, I will never remember why I really started.

But I can tell you why I keep going.  Why I continue to do it.  It is what I love doing.  I LOVE being able to reach hundreds of people, connect with people that share a common interest, I love having a place to talk about myself and learn.

This blog is my safe haven, my journal online.  Somewhere I can come and let out how I feel.  And most importantly, it is a place I can help authors.

Three years ago when I decided to start a blog, I would have never guessed that I would be where I am today.  Up until September of last year I had a total of 38 followers.  And while those followers are all fantastic, I just didn't really think it would make a difference if my blog just disappeared one day.  If maybe I decided to give up, who would mind?

Now, if I gave up I would be letting go of this wonderful experience I have had so far.  I think back on all the times I wanted to give up, dump the blog, quit writing and crawl in a whole.  And every time I thought those thoughts I was reminded of all the wonderful people I have met through having a blog.  And any time those thoughts weren't helpful I would think "If I quit yesterday, who wouldn't be in my life today because of it?"

If I quit blogging yesterday, who won't I be friends with tomorrow?  I will never know because I will never give up.  I can't let this blog go, not now.

With that in mind, I want to give a shout-out to some fabulous people I have met online.  Please feel free to click on each name to visit each of these wonderful people.

Author Interview:

Konstanz:  Please introduce yourself!

Helen:  Hi, I'm Helen Boswell, debut author of YA urban fantasy MYTHOLOGY and associate professor of biology for my day-job. I'm a fan of crazy hair colors and my life is ruled by the two sweetest little boys on the planet.

Konstanz:  If you ruled the world, what is the first thing you would do?

Helen: Institute a mandatory one-hour naptime in the middle of the day. Call it "reflection time," "decompression time" or whatever you wish, but we all need to remember to take time for ourselves during the day. And though I rarely get naps in these days, I find that I'm always more productive after I "get" to have one. And a lot more peaceful --> world peace!

Konstanz: What is your favorite "writing" snack food?

Helen: Vanilla ice cream with chocolate magic shell.

Konstanz: Do you name your characters for people you know?

Helen: I've named a few characters for people I know. Robin and Dawn are two characters in MYTHOLOGY and were two of my friends from college that I've always had fond memories of. Their characters are completely different from the people, but I did borrow their names (and I told them this also). Dr. Halverson was named as a joke because when we hired the guy who's office is now next to mine, he called me "Dr. Halverson" during part of the interview. We hired him anyway.

Konstanz:  If you had to write a book about yourself, what would it be titled?

Helen:Hummingbird. I'm told that I flap my wings a lot. Hence why I need more naptimes.

Konstanz: How would your 5th or 6th grade teacher have described your writing at the time?

Helen: Wow. Would I be dating myself to say that I don't remember what my writing was like at the time? But I do remember my 6th grade teacher, and her name was Ms. Bave. And NOW it's coming back to me. She told me to be more descriptive in my writing, especially when describing people and their actions. I think that when we're young, we all tend to use words like "nice" or "friendly" when we describe people. And now that I'm an author, we have to learn a whole new set of rules like "show don't tell." I love it though -- the writing process has really helped me to grow as a person. So thank you, Ms. Bave.

Helen is pretty much just awesome! Clearly, I didn't need to say it for you go figure that out.

Mythology ~ A book review

Mythology by Helen Boswell

Hope Gentry doesn’t believe in Fate. Born with an unusual power to see the dark memories of those around her, Hope just wants to be a normal teenager. But on the first day of her senior year of high school, she finds herself irresistibly drawn to a transfer student named Micah Condie. Mythology isn't just for English class anymore

My Review:

Demons, Guardians, Soul-Seers, Dark Pasts, Bright Futures, Hope.
Heart racing, palms sweaty, legs shaking, hardly breathing, I couldn't put this book down.
I was caught off guard by everything going on.
A demon for a boyfriend, A rebel guardian angel.  What else do you need?

I think about what to say while writing this review and the only word that comes to mind is Fantastic.  Pretty much the whole book was Fantastic.   There area few scenes where Adult Content is DISCUSSED but it never goes beyond that.  Ever.  Beyond those few scenes where it is discussed, FANTASTIC! That is my review.  The whole thing summed up in a single word.  Because, I'm kinda having a Book Hangover.  And can't really even think about what to say when I can't get over the words I read.

But for real (not that I wasn't being for real earlier),  This book was a breath of fresh air.  All the Cliche events in a  book that I hate, weren't in this book.  I was almost expecting them to pop out and I was genuinely happy they never did.  No crazy love triangle, no boyfriend/girlfriend being jealous and overly protective (as in, you can't talk to another person of the opposite gender or I am going to think you are cheating), no tear jerking break-up moments in attempt to save the each other.  Nope, it was truly a relief and a wonderful, well written story.  Helen, you have yourself a crazy, life-long fan!

Writing? Incredible!
Characters? LOVE THEM!
Dialogue? Perfect!
Story?  Give me more!

My rating?

(For those unaware, 5 dragons notes is reserved for the books that I LOVE the MOST EVER.  Like, these books get their own shelf and I buy a billion* copies to giveaway to all my friends because the book is THAT good)

*That might be an exaggeration.
