How to write 40k words in a single day!

I started writing in 2006 at the age of 13. My first book took seven years to write. The story it started as is not what it ended up becoming. The title changed, the setting changed, the plot changed, and basically it morphed from a single thought into a full world containing a series of stories (now known as the Finding Gold Series).

Upon finishing that final version I submitted the book to a publisher already 99% sure it would be rejected, but knowing if I didn't do something with it  I would never move on.

With notebooks filled with ideas, I moved onto something new; the book now published as Only Half Alive. It took me 13 days to write.

First book = 7 Years. Second book = 13 days.

What changed? Well, first of all, I didn't really care what that second book turned into. I just wanted to have fun. I let the story take me where it wanted to go, no questions asked. Whereas the first book was my baby! My precious first story that had to be perfect!

After seven years of writing, I was already good at typing fast. Whether I'm sprinting online or at a writer's retreat, my typing speed is constantly questioned. "How can you write so fast?", "Did you really write that much?", "It's not even possible." But the truth of the matter is, YES, I can write that fast, I do write that much, and yes, it's possible.

After my first book was published I was introduced to the world of sprinting. No, authors are not meeting up to go for a jog. Writing sprints! And I quickly learned I was a bit competitive. I finally found a sport I could win at.

The sprint group I joined welcomed me and I found a new way to write books faster. Most sprints were 30 minutes to an hour long. This worked for the first little while. But the more I did it, the faster I learned that I would only write for a short period of time and then get distracted the rest of my writing time.

Introducing the new schedule!

First, one thing you have to know is I'm a bit odd. Some people joke that I have OCD. I don't  know if that's true or not but I like things to have order. So joining sprints (that most often started at random times and ended just the same) was a bit stressful for me.

I created my own sprinting schedule. I start the sprint at *8pm and write for twenty-five minutes (until 8:25pm). I give myself a five-minute break. And then I start again at 8:30. I go for twenty-five minutes (until 8:55pm), take a five-minute break, and start up again at 9pm.

*Times are just examples.

This schedule took my writing from 500-1000 words every thirty minutes to roughly 1000-5000 words every twenty-five minutes (on average).

Life changing!

The questions kept coming ...

The sprinting made a huge difference. But that's not the sole reason I can write as fast as I do. And after being asked "How do you write so fast?" so many times, I decided to put together an actual list of ways I accomplish it.

  • 1.      DO NOT EDIT. I know you are tempted to stop and agonize over every single word while writing them. DON’T DO IT! IT’S A TRAP (read that in Ackbar’s voice).
  • 2.      Write with your eyes closed. This helps in many ways. The first of which is you won’t be able to see the things you want to fix, and therefore will listen to the number one tip.
  • 3.      Envision what you are writing. This is another reason to write with your eyes closed. Picture the scene, the moment, the characters. Put yourself in that situation.
  • 4.      Speak out loud. You will sound like a crazy raving lunatic to anyone nearby. This is why I write in the comforts of home, where no one will walk by, hear me talking to myself, and question my sanity (although my sanity is still questioned … often). But really, if you’re struggling (or even if you’re not) with dialogue, a great way to fix this is to have the conversation with yourself out loud, so you can hear how it sounds. Is it realistic? Would your character really speak that way?
  • 5.      Act it out. Again, I don’t recommend this if you’re in public. But acting out a scene can be a great way to figure out if it would work, how it would work, and if it conveys the right emotion for the scene. Don’t be afraid to get up in the middle of a sprint and quickly act out a scene you can’t get on the paper.
  • 6.      Skip around. If you can’t write the current scene in your book, don’t be afraid to skip to the next scene, or chapter, or end. Just keep writing!
  • 7.      Wear headphones. Make sure what you’re listening to matches the tone of the scene you’re currently working on. Don’t listen to something romantic while writing an epic battle scene. That will (most likely) NOT help.
  • 8.      Don’t get distracted by Facebook and other social media sites. Once you get pulled in there is no getting pulled out. I say this from experience. If you’re sprinting with people on Facebook just keep that conversation/post up, but do not go to any other page. And even at that, I recommend you find a less distracting place to sprint.
  • 9.      When you reach a scene where you don’t know how to describe something or you know you’re using the wrong word to convey something, put the word/description in parenthesis and move on. Once in the editing stages search for the parenthesis and fix those spots. This right here is probably the tip that saves me the most.
Through these things, I managed to write just over 40,000 words in a single day.

   I hope this is helpful!
As I discover more secrets to writing faster I will share them!
Feel free to post questions in the comments!

**The Enchanted Rose Promotion & Update**

**The Enchanted Rose Promotion & Update**

I am working night and day to get The Enchanted Rose revised, rewritten, edited, and in it's best possible shape so I can publish it and share it with you. But I also have a day job which is putting me behind.

The Enchanted Rose (Finding Gold, Book Two) was supposed to release February 10th. That didn't happen (obviously) and a huge part of the reason is because I ended up in Insta Care and then the emergency room.

The hospital bills are more than I can handle on top of publishing a book right now. Which is why I need YOUR help!

In order to publish The Enchanted Rose I need to to come up with the money for expenses (ISBN number, formatting, edits, and promotions . . . etc) beforehand.

So here's the deal . . . help me promote the pre-orders as well as my other books (and or purchase them/pre-order TER) and in return, when the book releases I will either A: Sing and record myself singing one of the songs from the book's playlist OR perform and record one of those songs on the violin! And of course I'll share the video with you all during the release party (and of course on here)! <3

Not to mention I have TONS of prizes to giveaway! <3

Thank you!!!

The original beginning of Only Half Alive

This is the original beginning to Only Half Alive. Sadly it was unusable in the final version but I still love it to death!

Please know it is completely unedited!

The characters and events portrayed in this book are fictitious. Any similarity to a real person, living or dead, is coincidental and not intended by the author.

One:
It was a night much like this one . . . the moment when humans found out that we are real. That vampires exist. Werewolves exist. That dragons breathe more than fire, but more importantly, that they are real. It was a cold fall evening that humans discovered the world is filled with supernatural beings.
It was a cold night as the rain hit against the window panes like rocks, sharp and creating a haunting echo that filled each room of every house.
It was a night so dark that no one dared leave home. This night was the night that changed many lives. Including mine. Not because I am human, but because I am what changed so much. For this night so many years ago, was the night that humans found out my kind exist. Demons are real.
This night, seventeen years ago, I was born. And with my birth came great darkness, great sadness where there should have been happiness.  But there wasn't. I am feared, hated, and humans and supernatural beings alike will stop at nothing to kill me.
But I wish they would succeed. Because I am not what they think I am. Yes, it is my nature to create and control the shadows. To haunt dreams and create nightmares. But it is not in my heart. For all I want is to be able to step into the light and feel warmth.
But my story isn't the only one that humans have gotten wrong. Because every story out there is a lie. Vampires are real and yes, they drink blood. But they do not hunt humans. There is only one occurrence in a vampire’s lifetime that will make them drink human blood. Vampires don't normally do such a distasteful thing. They much prefer the blood of a werewolf. But should they fall in love with one, they cannot spill another's blood. And so they turn to humans to survive.
And though creatures born of darkness, they do try to not be evil.
Werewolves are born of light, and do not transform shape under moonlight, but sunlight. Which is why they avoid it as much as possible. For werewolves are creatures of light and so they become their true form under it.  But in the darkness they can hide among humans, undetected.
Witches crave attention, mischief, and pain. They long to make others suffer in a way that would seem only as a joke to someone who do not know them. If ever facing a witch, don't trust a word she says.
And then there are Faeries, who much like Vampires, Werewolves, and witches, can appear as human. But do not be fooled, or afraid. Despite popular belief, Faeries are very kind and caring which is rather funny considering witches created them. But that does not matter. Being of the light, their soul was born to match that of the sun. If ever in the dark, hope that a faery is nearby and all will be light and never again will you be lost.
And though some believe the same of Unicorns, do not trust them. Unicorns may very well be the most evil of all. Unicorns by nature long to kill. If not, they would have no need for a weapon upon their head, a way for all to see that they cannot be harmed.
Whereas dragons are the kindest and most noble of creatures. They do not so much long for gold as something they can look upon in adoration and know that it cannot harm them. If a dragon is willing to save you, you are being watched over and never again will you be in harm’s way so long as the dragon remains alive. And that they do, for a very long span of time.
Then there are beings such as Elves who love the darkness they pretend to not be a part of and Dwarves who crave for the light they hide from. Necromancers who wish you no harm and the worst of all . . . humans.  Beings that believe they should be over the others. Beings that wish to strip away our powers and make us like them so that they are not the weak ones. Little do they know just how powerful they are.
So why then, is the world fighting over me, a simple and lonely girl who wants nothing but to break the curse that haunts me, escape the shadows that bind me.
Why is the world determined to destroy me, believing that I am evil when I am the most careful being alive? Never will I hurt another being intentionally. Never will I kill or lie or use my powers to harm others. But the world refuses to listen to me because of what I am.
Perhaps this world would be better off if more would listen rather than look. Because the eyes can lie but the heart cannot.
But even as much as they want to kill me, destroy me, I cannot hate them. I cannot wish harm upon them. And I cannot act on the feelings they stir in me when I hear them plan on ways to destroy me. Because that would only be proving them right. Because doing that would mean that this isn't a curse. This isn't something I can change. It would mean that deep down, I really am a demon.
And that is a thought I refuse to believe.
If I am a demon shouldn't I hate everyone and everything? Shouldn't I long to watch the world burn at my hand? That is what a demon is. I look like the others. I have no horns or tail. I am not a being of black shadow that flies about cursing and haunting others.
I am a girl who has long black hair and light pale skin. With deep blue eyes the color of the ocean. I am a being that looks much like a human and speaks and walks like a human. I am seventeen and bound on finding a way to be just that; human.
And from years of searching, years of hoping, there seems to only be one answer. Love. My issue lies with the fact that I am a seventeen year old female. Where am I supposed to find my soul-mate? Better yet, what boy is going to be searching for me? Would he believe me if I told him it were meant to be?
And more importantly, how am I supposed to know if it is meant to be?
The quest for love is a doomed one and so I avoid all thoughts of it. There must be another way. A way for me to find freedom. A way for me to stop the war bound to happen if I continue to exist.
The world is an unfair place, and each story out there is twisted every way. Rarely are the stories told correct.

My name is Christina, and I am here to set the record straight.

Finding Gold ~ The Golden Ticket

I have talked about Missing Royal pretty much non-stop since I decided to self-publish it. This story means everything to me and I want YOU to enjoy it and be just as excited!

The series title is Finding Gold. And today that title is a little more literal. You see, I have twelve copies of Only Half Alive left. Each copy will be sold on Etsy, HERE.

Inside ONE of those copies is a golden ticket for ONE Paperback copy of Missing Royal (Special Edition - a $30 value).

The ticket has been placed randomly in one of the books by one of my siblings and is small enough that until you open the book, it can't be seen. This means I don't know which book its in. One lucky person who purchases one of the last twelve copies of Only Half Alive is going to get this ticket.

*Three Golden Tickets have been created. The remaining two will be given away at other times but only this ONE is for a special edition of Missing Royal. The other two are for regular editions.

Why I panicked.

On May 29th 2013 around 10pm I was having a lovely conversation with a friend. We were discussing book launch parties and the many ideas I have for mine. As I thought about it I wondered just how many days I had until the day came.
I did the worst thing I could possibly do . . . I counted out exactly how many days I had. 121. That is how many days left between May 29th and publication day, September 27th. And I had a panic attack.

Not just a "Oh my goodness, there are only 121 days left!" Oh no, it was much worse. My body went weak. My stomach churned. I was going to vomit. I quit breathing. I couldn't think of anything but that number just dancing through my mind.  One hundred and twenty one days . . .

Everyone told me to just breathe. It was no big deal, that was 121 days left to edit, plan, format, get a cover, make a trailer . . . etc. I had plenty of time, no need to worry. But I was worrying. And I didn't know how to stop it.

Finally I walked away from the computer, took a breather, showered, and came back. And that number was still there floating on the screen. Still there nagging and freaking me out!

So why did I panic? Well let me give you the list!

  • That is only 121 to work on a million different things that need to be in order for this book to be publish worthy.
  • I wasn't even halfway through editing the book. How was I ever going to have it publish worthy in 121 days?
  • I have been working towards publication for seven years. In fact, on September 27th I will have been working for that day for exactly seven years . . . to the day.
  • My first book comes out in 121 days!
  • In 121 I will be a published author.
  • Only 121 days between me and publication, that translates to 121 days until my first book is out there in the world where people can read it, hate it, tear it apart, or love it and give it 5 star reviews.
There were plenty of reasons for me to panic. But luckily I have some pretty amazing friends who helped calm the nerves and got my heartbeat back down to a normal, okay speed.

Am I still nervous? YES! Am I panicking? Not quite so much. Am I pushing the release date back? NO!

There are now 119 days until Only Half Alive is published.
