I am now doing reviews! But before you jump up and down and get all excited read all the details!

Because I read hundreds of books every year and I own hundreds of books, I do not have time to write full reviews for every single book. But I am going to do star and rating reviews. 

1. Stars representing how good the book is

and

 2. A rating telling you what age group the book is a good read for! 

On some books I will do *full reviews and I will be glad to do full reviews for certain projects, or needs. Also, when I do interviews with authors, I will post full reviews for their already published, or newly published books! If you would like me to review a book for you, feel free to e-mail me!

Please introduce yourself:
Hi. My name is Karen Hoover, and I’m a book addict. I just can’t get enough. I read them, write them, sleep with them, eat them—wait, not that last part. Blech. Anyway, I’m a reader turned writer and have been doing one or the other since I was four.

How did you get into writing?
Well, seriously, it started with reading. My father loved books and used to let me sit on his lap while he read to me for hours. He swore he’d have me reading by the time I was four, and pretty much succeeded. When I was twelve I read a book by Gordon Korman that he wrote when he was twelve and that was the first time I realized that writing wasn’t just a dream—it was something I could actually do. I think that’s when it first started on the writing end and I’ve been writing in some form or another ever since.

When did you start writing?
I started writing for fun in second grade, making little books for my mom, but didn’t get really serious about writing until I was about twenty-four. I had a dream when I was twenty-two that just wouldn’t leave. It was so vivid and real, and I just had to write it. I spent the next seventeen years writing and re-writing the book that eventually became The Sapphire Flute.

When you first started writing, who in your life was the most supportive and helpful?
My mother, hands down. She told me I could do anything if I wanted it bad enough, and I believed her. Second to her was a friend of hers by the name of Darla Isackson, who was once an editor for Covenant (I think), and now writes for Meridian Magazine and has her own book out. Anyway, after reading some of my poems and stories, she told me that the only way I wouldn’t get published was if I quit writing. That was a huge confidence booster.

What has inspired your stories?
Dreams. Watching people. Daydreaming. Wondering “what if?” Other stories. Movies. Specific pieces of Jewelry. Walking. Driving. A lot of things.

What Hidden Talents have you discovered through writing?
That I’m a poet at heart. Even my novels come out poetic. Also, that I’m good with dialogue. I have found that it is easy for me to understand people because I can imagine what it would be like to live in their shoes. That’s made it a lot easier to be empathetic and tolerant toward others.

What do you think makes a good story?
Interesting characters, first of all, and they need to have a purpose and get into lots of trouble. :D

What is the hardest part of the writing process for you?
Parking my rear in the chair and just getting started. Once I start the words flow and I can write five thousand or ten thousand words without batting an eye. It’s just getting into the chair, putting my hands on the keyboard, and starting that’s hard.

If you had to start over and write the first book again, what would you change?
Well, I did that about ten times with The Sapphire Flute, so I pretty much changed everything I felt needed changing.


Which came first, the character or the story line?
ALWAYS the characters. I’m a people person and consider myself a character writer. Once I know who the players are, it’s easy to know what they would do in given situations and they tend to find their own way in and out of trouble.

How do you deal with Writers Block?
Oh, that’s a hard one. Well, I pray. A lot. I go up the canyons and sit in nature for a while, especially around trees. They inspire me. Sometimes I’ll write up there. I read inspirational quotes. I write what I call “Ramblings” and just pour myself out on the page, writing by hand, until I figure out what has me stuck. Sometimes it only takes a couple of paragraphs and sometimes it takes ten pages, but eventually I figure it out.

Are any of your characters based on real people?
YES!!! I actually have based several characters in my second book (The Armor of Light) on real people and plan to continue doing so in the series. It’s just plain fun!

Are any of the places (buildings, towns, pieces of art of jewelry) based on something real?
One of my books (unpublished) called The Misadventures of a Teenage Wizard, is completely based on real places. He lives in my old house, his grandma lives in my grandma’s house, he goes to my old junior high, and the neighbor’s farm is described just like our neighbor’s was.

What advice can you give to amateur authors such as myself?
Don’t give up! Go to writing conferences, join writing clubs, read, and learn as much about writing as you can. And don’t be afraid to talk to other authors when you get the chance. Also, don’t be afraid to play tricks on yourself when you’re stuck. One of my favorites is to change the background color of my word document to black and write with a bright color. Why? Because no matter how hard I try, I can’t type enough letters to fill a white page with black letters, but when I type with a black background, the letters are like light shining from the darkness. It’s beautiful.

Inspirations, Words of wisdom and the creation of a future "Quote"

Ever since I have become an author I have always dreamed about the day that I would be known for all the wonderful wisdom filled messages I would give to others. I even tried to come up with a few at first but soon realized that it's not something that automatically comes to you once you know what you want to do for the rest of your life.

Wonderful quotes and words of great help and inspiration come through hard work, lessons learned the hard way, experience and most importantly, talking with your best friend!

Yesterday I was talking to the Wonderful Lizzy Hughes and she was telling me about how she was having a hard time writing scenes with one of her characters because he's so hard to work with. She said that as hard as she tried, he's one of those guys that Just. Won't. Fall. She also said something about finally putting another person (one this stubborn character loves very deeply) on a branch and cutting the branch off the tree.

Without even stopping to take a breath I replied

"When your characters won't fall, make them jump after somebody else."

Lizzy and I looked at each other. We both smiled and started laughing. I was so excited that without even meaning to I said something EPIC! So epic that one day other people will "quote" me on it and it will be known! It will help inspire other authors on their journey to finishing their novels and stories of all kinds!

The ticking clock

Have a deadline? Fear you won't make it?  I've felt this way for some time! My book has been finished almost a year now and I've hardly touched it for editing. I began editing it once and it terrified me! I read one page and wanted to cry! It was awful! no, it was AWFUL! It was so bad that it's creator didn't even want to be associated with it!

I felt sick with myself! How could I gush to all my friends that I was going to be a published author one day and I couldn't even write something that I liked! But recently I have felt that I needed to get back up on the saddle and try again.

I felt like it was time once more to start working on it. So I worked out in my head how many pages I had to do a day in order to finish by November first -now you might ask why November first- NanoWrimo of course!- Anyways, I figured that with 99 days, with roughly 250 pages, I needed to do two and a half pages a day! And now I find myself ahead of schedule and on a wonderful roll of never ending words as I write away the night!

Getting back up on the saddle

It has been many many months since I have written! I tried to have my book finished before July but obviously that didn't happen. Now I am way behind but my new goal is November. If I have to stay up all night tonight to work on it, I will! Though I have already written three pages today and that is quite a bit considering I haven't been keeping up on it.

So my questions are:

What tools do you use to write quickly and swiftly to get a lot of writing done in very little time?
How do you set your goals?
What motivates you to work on your goals?
What inspires you?
If you have writers block, and a deadline/goal, what helps you get past that block?

Celebrating Darkspell! ~ Interview with Elizabeth Mueller

Elizabeth Mueller is an amazing Author and Mother! A great friend and over all one of the kindest people you'll ever meet! Konstanz: Tell me about your book. How did you come up with that (story, angle, idea)?

Elizabeth: If you venture into Gail Carson Levine’s Writing Magic, on page 4, there is a writing prompt. It is the 5^th one down if you want to see how Darkspell was born! As I jotted the prompt down, I let my muse take full control. Since I love romance, the first thing I thought was how would it be if the second person was a girl? And what if the first one fell in love with her? What if there was something special about her that lured him to her that she didn’t know? My mind deepened so wide, I didn’t think on the 2 dimensional level of these questions, but I felt them stirring as people bursting to be born on paper.

Konstanz: How did you get interested in writing this particular genre? And writing in General?

Elizabeth: It was the prompt that pointed me into this direction. It provided the magical element and my muse did the rest. Writing has always been a source of escapism for me. It helps me to regroup on so many levels. I don’t know what I’d do without writing.

Konstanz: What kind of research did you do for this book?

Elizabeth: I interviewed a friend of mine on marathon dates for the prom scene. A marathon date is basically a date that extends the entire day, but you go home to change into the next set of clothes that suit the next stage of the date. For example, you change into something comfortable since you’re going bungee jumping. Then you change out of that into diving gear for your scuba lesson, then after that, evening gown for dinner, after that . . . You get the picture! I researched on what exactly a coven is and its purposes. I also read up onCopenhagen and its climate and setting and language. I also did tons of pondering for the names of the people in the coven and for each of their gifts.

Konstanz: What's a typical working day like for you? When and where do you write? Do you set a daily writing goal?

Elizabeth: I have to admit that my work day has morphed into something entirely different ever since Darkspell was picked up. I used to dedicate every possible quiet moment to editing/writing. That was when the kids were either at school or sleeping for the night. Now, I am dedicating any possible chance at networking. Networking is fun, but it’s never ending with all the projects I have going.

Konstanz: What is the hardest part of writing for you?

Elizabeth: For me it’s finding the time. I can write an entire novel in 8 days if it was just me, but I would never trade my family away for a career. Why would I when I can do both? Since I never am left wanting for inspiration, I can still write a novel in a few months around my family’s schedule.

Konstanz: What’s the best thing about being an author?

Elizabeth: The satisfaction of achieving a huge dream and letting my kids see that it is possible.

Konstanz What are you working on now?

Elizabeth: I’ve been working hard on my networking. I’m celebrating Darkspell’s release with a pre-book launch throughout the month of July. Visit my website for updates!

Elizabeth: Believe in yourself!

Konstanz Do you have any favorite authors or favorite books?

Elizabeth: Kim Wilkins, Liz Kessler, Helen Dunmore, and Michele Bell.

Konstanz What question have you always wanted to be asked in an interview? How would you answer that question?

Elizabeth: If/when I become New York’s best seller, what do I plan to do with that influence? I would be like Oprah Winfrey. I would give of myself because God gave to me. I would do what I could to help others achieve their dreams—whether it would be as writers, as the struggling school systems, even empowering those who feel powerless. I would do my best to help others become stronger.

Konstanz: If you were writing a book about your life, what would the title be?

Elizabeth: Dark Thorns, White Roses

100 overused Descriptions

1. Blonde means Gold. Yeah that's right, if my character is blonde all the other characters are going to describe her hair as being like Gold. Really?!?!?!?! Come on fellow authors, be more original than that!

2. Her tears poured like rain. . . *sniffle*  Really???? Seriously???? PLEASE stop describing crying as falling rain. It doesn't matter how you word it, in what way you make the saying your own, that description is one of the most over done things!

Broken

Do you ever find yourself broken? Ready to give up and quit writing? You just feel so put down, like no one will ever read your book and so you're just not going to write it. . .

You feel like nothing is going forward and you will never get published. you want to lay down your pen. . . or type writer. . or computer . . . or whatever you write your stories with. . . and you feel that there is no point in writing. What is the point in writing?


The point of writing is telling stories that only you can tell.  Making somebody smile because they can escape from the real world and read the stories us authors write.

But though I know that, and I know why I write. . . there are times I feel like giving up.  Never writing again. There was a time when I thought I would never write again.  But people kept pushing me on. Kept telling me to go forward and write away.  Writing a story isn't just for the readers. When I write my book I am in the book. I escape into my own world.  So when you feel like putting the pen (. . .etc) down, just remember these to songs:

Most people associate these songs, and songs like them with life in general.  But the singers never specified. . . why should we?  These songs, alone with 'The climb" By Miley Cyrus, can be associated with anything. Including writers!

Complicated characters

Do you have moments when you think you have finally figured everything out and you know where each character belongs? You think that you know their back story, and where the story will take them and then all of a sudden. . . BAM! out of nowhere you are hit with idea's. . . way to complicate things for the story! Things that will make the readers be so hooked that they just can't put the book down!

Well isn't that the point? So why is it so hard to change things around so that the book is the best it can be? Well I will tell you. . . Because our characters like to be complicated! We as writers, really are just like readers. . . we see the story should go one way and we set it in place.  But like life, we cannot control everyone else and so our characters prove to us whenever we write that they really are in charge of the story! And personally I think it's better that way!  If someone wrote a book about your life and they messed it up so badly that even you didn't want to read it, would you go to them and say "HELLO! that is not how it happened! You have everything wrong!" or would you sit back and let them ruin it?

So as complicated as this book is getting (which even so, I am having a blast writing it!) I am glad that my characters are setting the story straight for me. I wouldn't want it any other way. . .I mean seriously, who knows it better then them? Well here's to Complicated Characters and writing onward!

2. I am the Hero and you are the Heroine and I am madly in love you: I think this one is kinda obvious. . how many times do we see that the two main characters fall in love with each other? Why can't the main heroine/hero fall in love with someone else? And where exactly do we get details on why that person loves the other? Looks, the simple fact that their the main characters. . .?

3.I'm a cold hearted, person that's willing to risk my life to save the world: So we've all seen the character who's that person with a heart of cold unfeeling stone. They're sarcastic (not in a nice way) and their mean. They push people to get what they want and yet when it comes down to it. . . they give their lives to saving the world. . . why? if their so cold hearted why did they just take a bullet for someone they hate? Or are they really cold hearted at all?
